  Annie’s Interview

Annie Wang ( Bingning Wang) :

Chinese ink painter

Annie Wang, as known by her Chinese name 王冰凝(Wang Bingnin), was born in Kaifeng, one of the seven ancient capitals of China. As with Beijing, there have been many reconstructions during its history. In this ancient city, Annie developed her love for art through her creative mother, who was ingenious with her handwork. Annie taught herself to paint in her childhood; she enjoyed painting everything she saw with beautiful designs and flowers that might be on a bowl or a vase. She also enjoyed writing poetry when she was young.

When she was 16 years old, she started her professional training at a local art school. She studied drawing and still-life painting with Gouache and art design water color. It was a very challenging study where every day she had to draw plaster figures. After about three years of hard training, she was very lucky to be admitted to the Art Academy of Henan University, the most high art institute in Henan Province. She contined to study painting and design in the Art Academy. She also studied the traditional Chinese ink painting techniques from Professor Hao Dawei, the son of the famous painting artist Haoshilin (郝石林,1916—2011). She graduated from the Art Academy of Henan University in 1994.

In the summer of 1994 after she graduated from the Art Academy of Henan University, she was assigned an excellent position in the local city television station of Henan Province. She started her new career to work as a reporter for 6 years where she could use her writing skills. In 2000, she went to Beijing Film Institute to study a major in film directing. After 1 year of study, Annie was a reporter and director with China Center Television Station (CCTV). She worked in this position for another 6 years in Beijing. She was a successful and professional reporter and director in her career in China.

She immigrated to America in 2007. She has lived in Los Angeles since then. Filled with nostalgia for her hometown and family in China, she finally came back to her love of art. During these six years in the United States, she has deeply loved and studied the Song Dynasty Huaniao and Chinese traditions of painting masters such as Tang Yin (唐寅), Chen Hongshou (陳洪綬), and Shitao (石濤). Zhangdaqian, (張大千, 1899-1983), is her favorite painting master. She especially loves painting flowers. She usually buys flowers every week, and paints them while they are fresh and beautiful. She gets her impressions from the masters in Chinese history, but she paints her flowers using her own style. Her composition and style are elegant with freshness and vitality. You can smell the fragrance of the flowers’ blossoms. She paints the flowers with love in her heart. She goes to botanical gardens on the weekends to find flowers in their natural environment. Annie feels that nature is an artist’s best teacher.

Annie developed her love of flowers with intelligence and inward spirituality. She is very talented with art. She has finally returned to her career to be an artist. When she is painting her flowers, she becomes homesick. She feels like it was just yesterday that she was a child in China. It also feels like once upon a time in the fairy story. She is the pretty little girl in a princess dress who was sitting in the yard painting the beautiful flowers in her family’s backyard. She dreams of being back in her hometown by the peachy flower blossoms with a swallow in the springtime again. She would like to be a botanical artist painting flowers from different types of natural habitats. She paints every flower differently to attract many types of patrons who love her style of painting which is making her a popular artist. She has been focusing on Chinese ink painting of bird-and-flower painting in the Chinese art tradition. From her blossoming flower paintings is emerging her own personal style. We all hope she is successful by painting her beautiful flower blossoms for everyone to enjoy.
